TEEN BLOOD DRIVE

Facilitator: American Red Cross
Sponsor: BVCC Teen R.E.A.D.Y. Club
Registration Deadline: July 10
The BVCC R.E.A.D.Y. team is looking for community teens and adults to help us, help save lives. Come with a best friend, sibling, or on your own to help those in the community who need the lifesaving gift provided by volunteer blood donors. To make this event happen and as an added perk, we’re teaming up with the American Red Cross who partners with the Van’s Warped Tour “Music Saves Lives” program to provide high school and college-aged donors with the opportunity to connect to music and entertainment and help save lives. All presenting donors at Music Saves Lives blood drives this summer will receive a FREE VIP Access pass to exclusive behind-the-scenes action when the Van’s Warped Tour rolls into Milwaukee on July 29, 2010!** To schedule an appointment either call (414) 482-1000, email Kimberly at kschubring@bayviewcenter.org or visit www.redcrossblood.org and select schedule an appointment then type in “4171” where it says drive Id. On the day of the Blood Drive all teens must present Photo I.D. There are a limited number of VIP Access Passes, so appointments are recommended. Walk-in’s will be taken on a space-available basis.
After giving blood, donors will enjoy complimentary refreshments in the canteen area to replenish fluids and sugars, while being monitored by Red Cross staff, in the event of any adverse reactions. To help avoid any complications, donors should make sure to get a lot of rest the night before, make sure to have a good meal 2-3 hours before their donation and drink plenty of fluids all day. The entire process from check-in to food and juice takes about one hour – not too bad for saving up to three lives!
*Note 16 yr. olds need parental permission. If you are 16 or 17 yrs. old please check the new weight limit guidelines on www.redcrossblood.org website before scheduling an appointment..
** Tickets to the concert must be purchased by the donor. The VIP Pass is an upgrade to this ticket.

Do you want to be READY to help your family, school or community in an emergency? R.E.A.D.Y. stands for Responding to Emergencies and Disasters with Youth and is run by you. Our goal is to introduce teens to learn a variety of skills including how to respond in emergencies, prevention strategies to keep people safe, problem solving, first-aid, team building, public speaking, grant writing and more. Club members complete 3 or more community service projects a year and have opportunities to attend specialized trainings.
Social activities like hayrides and trips are also part of the fun. Team members have opportunities to plan fundraisers, attend a week-long summer camp in Central Wisconsin that teach them specialized skills, give them access to professionals in medical, military, & public service careers and develops teens as leaders in our community. Teens with the best attendance and who participate in club fundraisers have the first opportunity to go to camp at a reduced fee. This club collaborates with The American Red Cross Youth Club program and The Center for School, Youth and Citizen Preparedness. It is also a great College Prep program and is good for college admittance. *Youth who are 12 years old are welcome to participate, but must turn 13 by June 17, 2011 to be eligible to attend camp.
