Wellness is…

  • Caring for your mind, body, and environment.
  • Self-defined and dynamic; there’s no one “right” way to pursue wellness.
  • Not simply the absence of illness or stress. You can still strive for wellness even when experiencing challenges or setbacks.

Just as a person is complex and made of many constantly changing parts, so is wellness! This is shown on the chart to the right, often referred to as the “Wellness Wheel.”

BVCC offers many different types of programs and services, each designed to support and serve community members while also bringing people together through reciprocity and common goals.

What are Social Determinants of Health?

According to Healthy People 2030, Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) are the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.

Did you know that medical care accounts for only 10-20% of a person’s wellness as a whole? Much more critical is one’s lifestyle; the habits, decisions, and patterns that make up our day-to-day lives!

SDOH also contribute to wide health disparities and inequities. For example, people who don’t have access to grocery stores with healthy foods are less likely to have good nutrition. That raises their risk of health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity — and can even lower life expectancy.

Much of the work to improve SDOH for all is required at the policy level and beyond. However, there are individual ways that everyone can take charge of their own health, including following a healthful diet, staying active, and nurturing one’s creative passions, spirituality, and social support systems.

Here at BVCC, we know that sometimes this is easier said than done, especially if you don’t know where to start. Read on for more information about the types of programming we offer to help you form healthy lifestyle habits!
